Kitchen Design Trends That Minimize Germs

Kitchen Design Trends That Minimize Germs

Your kitchen is the heart of your home as it serves as the gathering space for your friends and family. So, don’t you want this to be the cleanest room in your home? By choosing the right kitchen design layout and the right materials, you can help keep your kitchen clean. Not only that, but cleaning will be faster and easier to maintain.

Beyond the new COVID-19 germs, your kitchen is susceptible to other bacteria including salmonella, listeria, E. coli, and other illnesses. Even though you can't see them, they may be lurking in your kitchen. By washing your dishes right away, removing your trash frequently, developing a cleaning routine, washing your hands frequently, and doing your part to prevent cross-contamination, you can help keep your kitchen clean and your family healthy.

Be Mindful of the Kitchen Products You Choose
There are many beautiful kitchen products out there. However, bacteria can create a home on these surfaces. When you are thinking of remodeling your home, keep in mind that surfaces with cracks, pores, or fissures are more likely to hold onto harmful bacteria, as well as fungus and mold. Instead of buying more cleaning supplies, choose surfaces that are non-porous when choosing your kitchen design, including:
  • Quartz - When you add a quartz countertop into your kitchen design, you are choosing a non-porous, durable, and hygienic countertop. Since there are no spaces for bacteria to hide, quartz is an ideal choice in kitchens. To clean: Wash with soap, water, and a non-abrasive cloth.
  • Granite - Granite countertops are a very popular choice for kitchen countertops. They are made from high-quality, natural materials and must be sealed to reduce its porousness. Sealing helps maintain the beauty and prevents bacteria and other germs from hiding on the surface. To clean: Use hot water and dish soap along with a non-abrasive cloth.
  • Corian - Made of acrylic resin and natural minerals, Corian is a durable, solid surface that is both stain resistant and non-porous resisting bacteria growth. To clean: Warm, soapy water and a soft cloth. DO NOT use window cleaners and other harsh cleaners.
  • Laminate - A laminate countertop offers a high-end look at an affordable price. You can choose from a variety of styles including laminate that looks like wood or stone. To clean: Soap and water or mild household cleaners with a soft cloth.
Think Low Maintenance
When it comes to kitchens, most homeowners are thinking of high style, not low maintenance. But, since it's a kitchen, it's going to get dirty. Here are some things to consider to cut down on the mess and the need for cleaning often.
  • Work Triangle - Keep a tight triangle in your kitchen. This includes the stove, sink, and fridge. Keeping this area close together will minimize spills.
  • Flooring - Make sure that there are few seams and gaps in your floor as these are the places where dirt, dust, and other particles like to collect.
  • Cabinets – When choosing your kitchen design, choose cabinets that have flat doors as they are less difficult to keep clean compared to raised panel doors and those with intricate molding. Also, choose cabinets with a baked-on finish.
